The Growing Desk · August

What to do in the tomato patch this month.

Editorial guidance for UK growers. Weather, microclimate and individual soil vary — take these as a starting point, not a schedule.

Feed & Water

  • Water deeply and evenly — irregular watering causes splitting and blossom-end rot. Feed weekly with high-potash tomato food once first truss sets.
  • If in doubt: water in the morning, feed once a week during flowering, and remove any yellow leaves at the base.

Greenhouse

  • Damp down floors on hot days to raise humidity and deter red spider mite; ventilate mornings.

Outdoor

  • Pinch out side-shoots on cordon plants weekly. Support heavy trusses; tie in the leader.

Pests

  • Watch for whitefly, aphids and early signs of late blight (brown patches with pale halos on leaves).

Harvest

  • Pick fruit when fully coloured and slightly soft. Leave the calyx on — it keeps them fresh.
